One can find examples both ways
AS SMF-SEA-YVR
AC YVR-NRT
JL NRT-PVG
CX PVG-HKG-TPE
CI TPE-BKK

AC o/w business fare SMF-BKK $1433++.

AS SMF-PDX
AS PDX-YVR
CX YVR-HKG
CX HKG-BKK

CX o/w business fare PDX-BKK $4108++. Then I have to buy an add-on SMF-YVR. And don't get to stopover in Tokyo. Or Shanghai. Or Taipei. Boo.
