I converse fine almost all of the time with my Thinkpad (w/ built in mic and loudspeakers) and skype at slightly over 2.1 cents/min all in (my total bill is about $30/yr). It's not necessary to use a telephone at all. You can use it with the mike and speakers on your laptop. There's even a hack so that you don't need the physical MagicJack at all.
