Why is CX cheaper than AC when going to Asia?

Okay... so I'm booking my fights for friends and relatives this coming January to head back to Asia. My friends will be joining me in Manila for the first couple of weeks to discover the Philippines and other select Asian destinations. Since they've never been to Asia, I've told them to consider not flying AC but look at some of the premiere customer service oriented airlines such as CX and SQ.

Anyhow, so I called my travel agent to get the details on prices based on our schedule to Asia. She called me back with the following info...

AC YWG-YVR
CX YVR-HKG
CX HKG-MNL

Cost: $1640

AC YWG-YVR
AC YVR-HKG
CX HKG-MNL

Cost: $1750

Flying CX from YVR-HKG for $110 less (economy) completely surprised me. I've told my friends to fly CX as it's going to be the best $100 they didn't spend! LOL.

CX it is... I wonder if AC will play the price matching game.
