One can fly east, from North America to South Asia (for example) via Europe (and have a stopover in Europe
)using UA miles for a
single Star Alliance award. In practice this routing will be slightly more expensive, 140/105/70 for F/C/Y, than a transpacific routing, 120/90/60 for F/C/Y, but still less than a standard award. Factor in a stopover in Europe and this routing might be an option for the original poster?
I have ticketed this routing three times, one of which is BOS-FRA-BKK return in May 2004. I used 140,000 miles for a Star Alliance First Class award, with all four segments on LH.
