I guess it depends on how many seats DL has designated Choice Seats on a flight but on NW I rarely can't get a decent non-"Choice" seat when I book. And there is hardly a "bum rush" for them during OLCI, when elites can choose them for free. IME they stay pretty empty until very close to flight time.
It's a useful feature if I book late and all the better seats are already taken. At least I then have a chance at something decent (if I'm not already upgraded).
