A week ahead doesn't seem to be a problem; I do that rather frequently. 6 months ahead (when it involves family members and vacation travel) seems to be almost impossible.
On a related note....had dinner last night with a travel agent friend and this issue came up. She says the current lack of UAL award seats to Hawaii is a frequent topic of conversation with her peers. They all wonder what's going on and don't have any answers.
