Your paper ticket is for your entire itinerary, including your UA legs, am I correct?
What I've seen often when working with ticketing issues at the gate and the passenger has a paper ticket is something like this, so this would be my best guesstimation:
The passenger has an electronic ticket record in the PNR, however in the status field (it has things like CKIN for checked-in, RFND for refunded, PRTD for printed) it has a status code of
PAPR. So you can print an electronic receipt and everything, but you're not going anywhere if you arrive at the airport sans paper tickets. It basically keeps a record of the tickets electronically for quick reference.
Hope this helps, and have a wonderful trip! Hopefully we'll have an interline ETKT agreement with ANA soon enough
Happy Travels!
