Can you get any sleep on an overnight flight that leaves at 6-7PM?

I have a couple options for flights from Washington to London, two being after 9PM, one leaving at 7PM. I'd prefer the 7PM due to it being on a 747, much better for CW. I've always gone on the latest flight and still sometimes had difficulty sleeping due to my usually going to sleep at midnight. Naturally I feel as if I'd have an impossible time falling asleep at 7PM. So how do you more frequent fliers do it? Ambien? Does it result in a decent sleep? Thanks for the help!
