If none of the above are true, then both the company and the employee have made some errors in judgement!
It's the attitude and inflexibility displayed by some though when times have changed. That regardless of a company's financial position, trading outlook, redundancies taking place or looming, they would have no hesitation in waving their contract about saying "I will only fly J, it's here in writing in my contract". A disgraceful attitude IMHO
