I'm another 6'5" traveler (plus I'm tall in the torso) and the head-rest is basically an upper back booster for me when its retracted. Extremely uncomfortable to say the least. The first thing I do when I get to my seat is raise the headrest all the way, regardless of what type of aircraft or seat I'm in. I only lower it if I'm specifically asked by an F/A (sorry F/As, but its my one and only act of civil disobedience on an airplane). And yes, I've had it slammed into my upper back/neck many times by harried F/As.

The thing that truly bothers me about the headrests has more to do with coach passengers on the Airbuses. The small headrests in Y are usually pretty easy to push down. I sit in an aisle seat most of the time and it seems that every third passenger that walks past my seat grabs my headrest and pushes it down while bracing themselves. I find it incredibly annoying! Especially when I'm trying to sleep. Apparently the head rest sticking up from the back of my chair (unlike 95% of all the other chairs in the coach cabin) is invisible to most people

I am OK with the policy....I am just not OK with the randomness of the application of it.
Unfortunately, it seems as though its just like many other in-flight experiences with UA... Random application of the rules is the norm
