You can try AA and tell them the connection is too tight. Tell them the flight you would like to be on and they may change it. They will not cover a hotel room for a 10 minute time shift.
They've already changed the flights without my interaction - ie they will not allow me to have a seat held on the originally scheduled flight, so I was booked on the next day's first connecting flight, involuntarily.
