Nonetheless, it has been my experience that high-performers usually expect a reward that is in-line with that performance; whether that's salary, recognition/promotion or something so trivial as an enlightened approach to travel.
Our company is pretty successful thanks, started in 2001 and now employs about 40 staff. All team players too with a very rigorous selection process - with a good set of tests developed to weed out the me-me-me types at an early stage.

And we have just added a new selection criteria too. The "I simply must fly J or I'll burst into tears" types - we have added a couple of carefully worded questions on interviewees expectations

An interesting debate could be had on your comments on self-interest being the key to success. The last 4 weeks have surely shown that focusing employees into purely looking at their own self-interest has been a key factor in the collapse of the financial markets. It would appear much of the reckless and high risk lending that has taken place was driven by an obsession to meet targets to trigger bonus payments.

And how about the endowment mis-selling of the 1980's and many people persuaded to switch safe index-linked / final salary pensions into risky annuity schemes? Both predominantly driven by a greed culture of wanting to trigger huge commission payments. Yeh, I agree, self-interest is wonderful

Anyway, our team approach seems to be paying off given our growth. And we have a vacancy we are desperate to fill too for a rail Signalling Systems Engineer. So if you know anybody let me know.....must be a team player though and not want any silly "I must fly J" clauses put in their contracts
