They should have put you through to reservations and reservations could have gone through various options with you: i.e. different dates.
If you wanted to come back the next day and they were sold out in WT & WT+ (and only had Club), then you were probably looking at 4 (family of 4?) full fare, one way tickets...
Basically if that is all they have, that is all they have and there is little that they can do for you (unless maybe you were willing to wait in Atlanta a few days for a flight with availability in WT/WT+). You did EXACTLY the right thing and shopped around to find a different airline with tickets in economy available (AND you scored upgrades
).
No a suprising outcome, but cannot speak for the agents (and their possible rudeness) because I wasn't there.
