I thought (generally speaking) that troubles getting to the airport for the outbound flight were covered by insurance, but not for the return flight. I haven't checked my policy, but perhaps you could check yours to be sure.

Your complaint is with Avis. What help are they offering?

By the way, 'recommended business partner' means only that BA earn something. Their liability doesn't go beyond offering miles.
