This is such a double edged topic. I think it just isn’t possible to look at the situation from a western perspective . Much of the staff at QR and other mid east airlines are from Asia. Quite possibly the majority come from poor or at least less advantaged backgrounds and are “happy” to have the opportunity to work abroad to help support their families back home. I’m not saying that any company should treat their employees badly, but are these companies doíng that? Or doing that according to western work ethic? I’m sure poor treatment is endemic in this part of the world and I don’t condone that. One just has to look at the plight of the laborer in Dubai to see that happening. It is sad that such rich emirates and states have such little regard for basic human rights. Maybe I am wrong and there is a significant turnover in staff at QR, I’m not sure. I think as well that employment in the Premium terminal must be quite ok compared to any of the construction sites as I’ve observed the job seems to be relatively easy and all in air conditioned comfort. Now what life is like outside work, I don’t know. Probably not the greatest. I do believe most of the employees are better off here than back home. They do make a salary and can support their families. I’m sure a lot of them would love better working conditions, wouldn’t we all. QR is probably no better or worse than EK or EY...much of the same muchness.
