My motto is, if you're not going to upgrade on transcons, when are you? You can't (usually) use 500 milers to upgrade international itineraries, so there's really nothing left to use them for except shorter trips.
That said, if you're fine with paying for 500 milers (since you're a 1P, it should be $200 per 4-pack), the Airbus is a nice plane to fly up front on for that long.
However, I would caution you (since you're actually paying for the 500 milers specifically for this trip) not to do it UNLESS you can confirm the space before you get to the airport, AND you can get into row 2 or 1. The problem with row 3 is if your equipment changes to an A319 at the last minute, your first class seats would be gone. I'd hate to see you spend the money and then not be able to use your 500 milers.
If that sounds good, do this:
1. As soon as you are within your 72 hour window, call UA and see if there is upgrade space available for both of you.
2. If there is, have the agent confirm you in F and then just purchase the 500 milers over the phone.
