The 80K award takes you to Oceania (incl Fiji) where the 60K award does not. I advise you cancel the reservation and find another date that has availability non-stop to New Zealand from LAX. In fact, it sounds like the move you describe is permanent. How does *A know that your ultimate destination is not Fiji, you are treating Nadi as a hidden city?
I think the 60k award to NZ/Aust is the BEST bargain on the *A goodies cart. If you are thinking of giving them a gift, why not route LAX->AKL (or Christchurch)->SYD (or Cairns)->AKL->LAX so they can also see Oz? This way can use New Zealand as a stop over to Australia, even if the stop over is 6 months long!
Also... the Fiji award (from NZ/Aust) is only 20k, so if they do want to go back to Fiji for holiday, it is relatively inexpensive, mileage speaking.
