UA flies LAX-SYD and SFO-SYD. Dunno how availability is, but it's another pair of possibilities to check.

Another possibility if you're planning a fairly long trip is a Circle Pacific
fare. I flew SFO-AKL-(multiple domestic legs)-AKL-NRT-SFO in Dec-Jan for about $5000 per person in J, about half the price of a normal J round trip. The rules require at least one stop south of the equator and one north, so a day in any of SIN, HKG, NRT, etc. would do. We flew back on ANA, not quite as nice as the flat beds on NZ but not bad.
