Not true. You can move 25k/yr Amex --> CO --> Amtrak --> UA with no devaluation. Do 25k in December and 25k in January.

But there is an alternative way to approach this situation. First, open a Delta Skymiles Account and a Mexicana Airlines Frecuenta account. Second, accumulate enough points on Amex for a desired reward. Then call Delta Skymiles and/or Mexicana Airlines and arranged for a reward reservation. Finally transfer the Amex miles to the desired airline Delta or Mexicana. Note Delta's agreement with United ends soon, so act quickly.
Why use Delta? Especially if you don't want orphan DL miles. You can claim UA awards via USAirways (an Amex transfer partner), Mexicana, and ANA. And depending on the award you want, each airline may have a different price. So study the award charts.
