On the Starwood board the Lurker says otherwise:
"In order to keep the Starpoints you have from expiring, you have to have a stay transaction posted to your account in a rolling twelve month period of time. A stay transaction is one that originates from one of our participating properties, but points earned from our marketing partners such as AT&T and the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express also are read by the database as being "stay transactions"."
