I received a refund from AA to a cancelled credit card (also CitiAA) and was lucky I still had the account information online so I knew to call the credit card company and request a check for the credit balance. I don't know whether they would have initiated contact with me regarding the credit.
I believe that most CC companies' policy is to issue you a refund of any credit balance after some number of days (90?), whether or not your account is open. This must be required by some rule or regulation somewhere. Surely they can't just keep your money forever.
