Don't overlook "short-distance" trips. These often have high per-mile costs, be rarely or less steeply discounted, and if you and your companion need to fly there, you'd get more of a "twofer" benefit than using them as transcons where 2 paid S, T, W, etc. tix would be less than a V or higher fare.
