I was getting to the point where I felt I would end up stabbing some one, just because my stress levels were that high

Little minor blips you could handle no problem in a normal situation become major hassles, just because they are piled on top of an already nasty situation. And I won't even mention me in Y on PMT

We probably had a similar journey then... once I got Elite status and had lounges etc, that felt like a big achievement and also made the journeys a bit more pleasant, and that was enough for another few years. But from the very first time I flew business, I decided that was the way to travel, and eventually I wanted to travel that way all the time. It took longer than I thought but I got there in the end.
And I totally agree about the Y stress levels. I guess some people can be zen about the whole thing and just let it all drift past them, but unfortunately I'm not one of them - and every time I had a crappy experience in Y, it riled me that up the other end of the plane was a comparative haven of tranquility that I was missing out on.
I think anyone who does a serious amount of travel, ie: hundreds of flights a year, will soon start wanting to maximise their travel experience in any way they can. When you're on the road this often, you take every little benefit you can get.
