This is my favorite part: "... it encountered the turbulence somewhere over the Pacific Ocean." Thanks, that's very helpful.
On a more serious note, this is a useful reminder about the potential for injury. I usually fasten my seatbelt, but have never actually experienced dangerous turbulence and often wondered if it was much ado about nothing.
