Yes, I had the same at YYJ a few months ago as part of a "random" supplemental check. The patter-downer was female and very apologetic and explained what she was doing - I don't think she was that happy with the whole thing either. I've had the full treatment other times when randomly SSSS'd.
I'm not certain what they would find with the light superficial pats that they wouldn't find with the scanners.
