Because you have intermediate stops* in the USA (i.e. not a direct ITI), you will need to clear U.S. Passport Control, claim all of your luggage, clear U.S. Customs, then re-check your luggage on to LAX-ORD-YYZ.

Furthermore, you might arrive from SYD into the TBIT, meaning that you would need to move your bags over to T4 to check in at AA.


*If you were flying LAX-YYZ nonstop, chances are your bags could be transferred directly without your needing to claim them before clearing Customs. Canada is probably the only remaining location where the USA allows ITI for outbound luggage (but not passport control). Unfortunately, in your case, since you will be going through ORD as well, you will need to claim your luggage.
