Customs officers? Now I really don't know but in my 20 trips to south africa in the last 2 years I haven't seen any of them even remotely interested in any pax coming in. It's even less attention now that they removed the "customs form" requirement.

The only thing that is more expensive in South African shops in my experience is premium alcohol (Martell XO and similar) All the rest is way cheaper purchased in Africa.
