Using a non-flexible ticket, I have been refused standby several times going from ARN to TKU. At one point I had to wait for 8 hours in ARN watching a few flights to TKU leave with free seats. (yes, bad planning on my part )

Simple response from agent was: You are free to buy a new one way ticket, or you can wait until your flight leaves later tonight...
