When on MR's I highly advise that you have your laptop handy with a copy of the most current United Electronic Timetable. This timetable is updated every Saturday. Be prepared to generate your own routings to get home and be prepared to present this routing (and a couple of others) to the agent at the airport. YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It will make things go a lot smoother.

fwiw, while on a same day MR a delayed flight made the remainder of the trip impossible.
UA offered to send me directly back home.
Instead, after reviewing the UA timetable and ITA, I asked to be booked on a much longer route (than originally booked) back home.
So in addition to the longer routing EQMs/miles, I got even more EQMs/miles because the new legs were booked in F and Y,
