I think this would be one of the ideal solutions (fix the problem, not the symptoms), but at the very least they could use the multitude of contact methods to at least let people know something happened rather than waiting until the last minute. This happened last year where we were suddenly on a connection flight ORD-DEN-SAN one week from departure. Now I check more frequently, but when you buy your Xmas flights in April, it's a long time to keep trying to check every day. Not exactly what we had planned for when we purchased the non-stop with three small kids
