A lot has to do with when you upgraded. I suspect you upgraded before the lid got slammed shut. Two examples:
- I booked SFO-BRU at the beginning of September. IAD-BRU was showing NC7 and BRU-IAD was showing NC9 for some time before that, and dropped to NC6/NC9 after upgrading. Two weeks later, both flights went straight to NC0 without anyone else upgrading (for this specific instance, I did use the seatmaps as an indicator, as people who clear upgrades at booking will almost always reserve seats right away in my experience).
- I'm looking at flights to Europe in the beginning of May 2009. I have yet to find a single flight from anywhere in the US to anywhere in Europe within a week of my preferred dates with any NC availability. (I'll take UA anywhere in Europe because our final destination is STR anyway.)
