Next thing I know the automated UPG system tells me that I'm upgraded. I go to gate and see 4 ppl on upg list, my name is absent. Then the monitor shows my name as 'cleared' for an upgrade (yes upgrade and not standbye list). I ask the GA who says he sees me as 5th on list and has no clue why the monitor shows otherwise.
Before departure the first 2 people on the upg list clear to first (one at gate and one once on brd). My name shows as no 1 on the cleared list and the former number 1 guy shows as number 2 on the cleared list.
About the bolded portion: the "cleared" screen on the gate monitors does not distinguish between "cleared" the standby list and "cleared" the airport upgrade standby list (full name of the upgrade list). It's entirely possible that the monitor showed you as clearing the standby list and thus, obtaining a seat on the flight. Showing you as "cleared" did not establish that you had cleared the airport upgrade standby list.
Interesting question. Recently, a Delta elite posted a rant on the Delta forum that he expected the gate agent to process one upgrade, then process his standby request, then resume processing the upgrade list. The reason: that would have allowed him to get an upgrade ahead of all the other confirmed passengers with lower status. AA (and Delta) typically process upgrades and then process standby - so that even an EXP who gets on the flight generally gets their standby seat after all the upgrades are gone. I don't know the answer - if an agent clears me from the standby list prior to processing many of the upgrades - should I go to the top of the upgrade list?
