Entropy, do you remember if you were logged in(identified to UA) at the time the upsell offer popped up for you? The answer may be revealing as to whether or not this is purely random or targeted.

I don't think this is an altogether bad approach for United although I am surprised that they would offer it on such a cheap fare as V.
