The trip is on a OW150C award doing a round-the-world trip. It was ticketed in August. Making it a stop at YYZ would not change much the miles calculation when we booked it. However, at the time we booked it, we booked the 23:35pm YYZ/LHR flight that was available to book. Now the rules have changed, I dont know if AA would accommodate us by letting us taking the morning AA MIA/YYZ flight which would make us go over the 6 hour connection window.

I made the MIA-YYZ-LHR connection a couple of weeks ago. As described above, although you do not exit T3, you do have to clear immigration, walk through the baggage hall to the exits, go upstairs, then clear security. Since you have carry-ons, you might also be subject to a detailed search (I was, although the people conducting the search were very polite and professional).
If you are in J, the BA lounge above Gate 33 is a pleasant place to spend a longish layover. Good food, free wi-fi and computers to use, and a view of the tarmac.
BTW, the reason for the "cancellation" of the late-night departure is that BA's winter schedule went into effect on 10/26/08, and the 23:25 departure (only on Mondays IIRC) was eliminated).
