I just had an experience less than 2 weeks ago of missing a connection (with a sleeper) due to a delay of a derailment (not my train). They offered to put me on the next day's train ^ BUT the next day's train had no sleeper's available! (I was at the end of my vacation, and just cut my trip short and returned home - via a different direction on the train.)
