They look at the prior stay history to determine who will get an extension of platinum status. It sounds like those who have stayed beyond the 75 night minimum will get an additional grace period to keep platinum.
This happened to me. I came off the road in 2003 (and haven't even qualified for Silver since then), but it took several years for my status to dwindle away to nothing.
I had an extremely high number of nights stayed in 2002; MR customer service explained at the time that that worked in my favor with respect to retaining status that I hadn't otherwise earned.
