Marriott uses a calendar year window to keep an existing level, but they use a rolling 12-month window to achieve a higher elite level.
So in your case, if you reach your 75 nights before Dec. 31, 2008, you will then be Plat for the rest of 2008 and all of 2009. If you can wait and get your 75 nights in a 12 month window sometime in January, 2009 then you will receive Plat elite status for all of 2009 and 2010. So you may well be better situated to wait a few weeks to get those last few nights needed.
