So contrary to what you might think, yea, I "REALLY do understand" exactly what you are attempting to do, I simply don't agree. There is actually a difference.
It may be then that we don't disagree. I wasn't raising a moral point in my initial postings; I was just trying to understand the consequences of cancelling an AMEX PLAT card with an FHR reservation outstanding. Whatever moral opprobrium may attach to my choice to either keep or cancel that FHR reservation is something I will weigh for myself. However, I do like to understand all the factors in making that decision, specifically whether I will have a problem checking into an FHR reservation if I've cancelled my Platinum card. The benefit of dealing with the issue this way is that I may not have to reach the moral issue--if I won't receive the FHR benefit, then I'll either rebook the hotel reservation under a non-FHR rate or else continue to hold onto the Platinum card. The "moral issue" only arises if I can utilize an FHR reservation with a cancelled Platinum card. As for guidance on how to resolve that sort of ethical dilemma--well, that's not really why I consult Flyertalk, no offense. (Really, I hope you don't take offense. My response was based on what I saw as an inapposite answer to my question.) I'm just trying to understand the practical consequences of taking a particular course of action.
