The cost / benefit analysis that determins whether the incremental pro rated credit is more valuble than the benefits for a given FHR reservation (only one month away, in my case) is entirely separate. Perhaps some of these folks would find it "interesting" that this is the first time in all my years as a Platinum member that I've actually made an FHR reservation.

Yes, your correct the point really is elementary; Amex offers a suite of benefits for the price $450 per year. If you value that basket at that price, then you keep the card and enjoy the benefits. If you don't, then you cancel the card, Amex gives you a pro-rated refund of your annual fee (which is in my opinion pretty generous, it's likely not all cards do that) AND you lose the ability to use the suite of benefits provided. Pretty elementary indeed...
