I don't stay with family when I am actually visiting my family so this isn't something I would consider when on business. My hotel room becomes my office when I am traveling - I'm often up in the early morning hours with email or preparing for the next day's meetings and if I'm entertaining clients in the evening I would be returning late at night. I think that would be quite an imposition for friends or family. I understand when companies restrict or cut back on nonessential business travel, but to expect employees to bunk together or impose on friends or family would be over the top and sends a bad signal re the company's financial posititon.
