If it's plain MTA stuff, I too prefer hopstop, however Hopstop won't get me from my house to the train station, and then on a train and then on a subway (not that I need directions, it's just an example), I could do that on the google version.
It's just another tool to add to the toolbox when needed.
Hopstop now covers commuter rail, so it will do everything but the driving directions to the Metro North/LIRR/NJT station.
