Surely if travelling for work your focus *should* be work not a family reunion or socialising (from a company viewpoint). Sounds extraordinary to me-I'd be assuming my employer was having big financial difficulties too (or was using credit crunch talk as an excuse to penny pinch to a silly extreme) and would be looking to move companies too.
