You never need a 4x4 if you are on normal roads. These are maintained for ordinary vehicles. If you are going off-road for some reason then you need a 4x4. On the other hand, if you want a car with all-wheel drive because you think you get better control - that's fine - until you try to stop - no advantage. But it's warm along the water and all season tires do best when there's no snow.
