That is the real reason.

Additionally some airlines do factor additional add-on / on-board sales comparatively VERY heavily into their revenue models - and non-flying passengers rarely make such purchases as not many of these purchases are committed to in advance.

Tariff abuse is something totally different and it is something - in the case of not flying the return portion of a published return fare - that BA barely have a leg to stand on in the world of today, well if they expect people to continue making use of BA.

Enforcing an unrealistic premium on one-way tickets is simply out of date with the world we live in.

It would cost them business in the world of today not protect their revenue.
- Which is why I've been amazed recently to hear it occurring.

As for TP and miles in the case of no-show etc, personally I think (for similar reasons to the return/single debate) it is increasingly going to be seen as unfair, but ` a lot more airlines do this, so BA would be one of the last to abandon it based upon their track recored on return vs. one-way.
