My letter (copied to G Atkinson):
This is a follow up to an earlier email: 500 mile minimum for short
flights -Ref#: XXXXXXXXX
In that email I stated that United's removal of the 500 mile minimum
EQM had caused me to fly American Airlines for my short flights. And I
had now qualified for Platinum Status on American.
I want to now let United know that if their policy does not change,
they will lose me as a 1K flyer starting in the 2009 calendar year.
Recently, American has changed their policy, but elite travelers on
American still get 500 minimum EQM. Continental offers 500 minimum EQM
for their elites. Delta and Northwest offer 500 minimum EQM for their
flights.
Any of these 4 United competitors will get my business before United
for any bookings including short flights (especially those less than
200 miles).
Because American has now clarified their policy and I know that I will
recieve 500 minimum EQM on their short flights in the future, I have
decided to switch my business to American in 2009 in order to qualify
for Exectutive Platinum. I like United, and will try to keep Premier
for Economy Plus, but I cannot justify 1K status when other Airlines
offer better policies.
I fly many short hops from LAX and ORD and this policy has a big
effect on these itineraries. It just doesn't make sense to fly UA
LAX-ORD-MKE when American offers me 1732 more RDM (with Platinum bonus
miles) and 866 more EQM than United!
United has taken away an important benefit and in my case, it is going
to result in a change in my loyalty if it does not return (at least
for elites).
Thank you for your time
