You won't get drink chits on a domestic itinerary.

As a 1K you get COMPLIMENTARY access to the RCC when flying on an international itinerary (Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Carribbean doesn't count as "international"). You will also get two drink chits (as a Star Gold) when traveling internationally.

As a PAID MEMBER, your membership fee go towards:
1) Somewhere to hang out other than at the gate or in the concourse.
2) Some light snacks.
3) Semi-cleaner restroom facilities.
4) Direct access to UA customer service agents. This is very useful for re-booking in the event of flight delays and cancellations.
5) A "member's only" bar that offers free soft drinks and alcohol for a nominal fee.
6) Complimentary high-speed wireless internet access.
