He might be defensive about the cough. You don't know the kind of comments he's had to deal with enduring the cough he has.
I'm not good at confrontations, and nothing except having him booted from the plane would have solved the problem (full flight). Any suggestions?
Next time, if you see that there are empty seats once the plane takes off, go to a flight attendant and see if you can switch seats. Don't make a big deal about it.
If not, zone yourself out in music with those big head phones.
