Mm, this happened to me while at Okayama train station in June of this year. The officer was not terribly friendly and after five minutes, gleaned enough information out of my purpose of visit to leave me alone. In fact, I've been stopped by the police more times in Japan than anywhere else, including one time for jay-walking and another two for riding my bike by the Imperial Palace. Yosh.
