Does this work for a flight that is a mix of international and domestic?

Mrs P and I are flying AA1078 BGI-BOS via MIA, in early Dec
Direct BGI-BOS miles are 2,132 (according to great circle mapper)
Can we upgrade using the required number of stickers for this mileage?
Or does the fact that the first sector is international throw a spanner in the works?
