The definitely have an effect on the international flights I've been on, although my return is always at LAX, so it may be specific to the baggage handlers at your home airport.

At LAX lately they have not only sent the priority tagged baggage down the chute first, the worker sorting the bags on the belt has pulled the tagged bags off the carousel for pickup at the side. Very thoughtful IMO.
